The Harts
Inducted 15 November 2017
In 1965, Bob Gardiner (vocals) and Peter Mackay, formerly of The Pirates joined up with Derek Manning (bass) and Harry Herni (lead guitar) from fellow northern suburbs band The Exiles, to form The Harts. The band built a strong local following, performing at local venues including the Cardijn Club, Princeton, 20 Plus Club and Shindig.
In late 1966 The Harts headed to Melbourne on the first of many visits, playing discotheques including Impulse, Black And Blue and the Thumpin’ Tum. Signed to EMI, during one trip east they recorded ‘Little Girl’ and ‘Cry No More’ at Armstrong Studios. Upon its release on single in April, 1967, ‘Little Girl’ became a Top 20 hit in Adelaide. Together with Bev Harrell, The Harts supported the Walker Brothers, Roy Orbison and The Yardbirds at Centennial Hall in January, 1967. Over the years, the band underwent a number of line-up changes with, at various stages Mike Wade, Phil Carr, Mike Brady, Mike McGuire and John Van Zyl included in its ranks. In November, 1969 The Harts played the opening night of Swinger, at the prestigious Hotel Australia, becoming the resident group. The band continued to tour extensively, performing in Melbourne, Queensland and, eventually Western Australia, where they disbanded in 1971.
