The Superjesus

Inducted 3 March 2017

The Superjesus were the most successful new band to emerge from Adelaide in the 1990’s.  Established in 1994, initially as Hell’s Kitchen, the band changed its name to The Superjesus in January, 1996 with a line-up comprising Sarah McLeod (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Stuart Rudd (bass), Chris Tennent (lead guitar) and Paul Berryman (drums).

With their guitar-driven grunge and pop songs overlaid with McLeod’s soaring voice, The Superjesus gained significant national popularity with their extended play ‘Eight Step Rail’ in 1997 which saw them win Best New Talent at the 1997 ARIA Music Awards.  It was followed by their debut album ‘Sumo’ in 1998 reaching #2 on the ARIA Albums Chart and winning Best Rock Album at the ARIA Music Awards.  In 1999, The Superjesus re-located to Melbourne and Tim Henwood joined on lead guitar.  ‘Jet Age’, the band’s second album was released in October, 2000 peaking at #5 on the ARIA Albums Chart.  A third, ‘Rock Music’, was issued in 2003 reaching #14, after which they disbanded.

In 2013, the band reformed, initially for a one-off show, but which led to further tours and recordings.  The Superjesus have been an influential part of the Australian music scene for 30 years, and an inspiration for many female-fronted rock bands.
