The Others

The formation of The Others can be traced to 1963, to the meeting and subsequent friendship of Ian Nancarrow and Terry Radford. The two began playing as a duo at parties as The Others. Before long, Nancarrow and Radford established a full band. Their repertoire comprised material from seminal rhythm and blues artists, along with British influences such as The Rolling Stones and Animals. The band scored a regular gig at the Sharade Coffee Lounge in Chapel Street, Glenelg. When Terry Radford’s university studies prevented him from continuing, he was replaced on guitar by Rick Harrison. With the arrival of Harrison, The Others began playing more Rolling Stones and Pretty Things material. The Beat Basement in Rundle Street had a very English scene and The Others built their reputation as one of Adelaide’s first and rhythm and blues groups there.
In mid-1966, the Others recorded two songs at Visound Studios in Hindley Street, a version of Bo Diddley’s ‘Dancing Girl’ and ‘Sharade Blues’, in honour of the coffee lounge they regularly played. In 1967, The Others undertook a 3 month stint in Queensland but, shortly after their return, broke up. The Others underwent a second life of significant proportions in the late 1970’s when they reformed and released the classic ‘Collectors Item’ album. Over the years, the band has undergone many line-up changes, always with Ian Nancarrow at the helm and are still going today, recording and playing their uncompromising blues to a loyal cohort of devotees.
